Christmas Eve at Friday Harbor Lisa Kleypas 9780312605865 Books Reviews

Holidays bring such a tangled mess of emotions. This story reflects the confusion and anxiety hidden beneath the surface of holiday events. Most importantly, it defines hope, magic, and the true meaning of family. Well done!
As an avid reader I'm always skeptical of books that have been made into a movie. Although the story was different from the movie; it was delightful. I felt the characters in the book lived up to the characters in the movie. Highly recommended.
This is a touching book about a man raising a niece who lost her parents when both of their lives were blessed meeting the wonderful owner of a toy store who was able to draw both of them back to the enjoyment of life as well as love.
I have been a fan of Lisa Kleypas for years and years, and when ever I read one of her contemporaries, I am always struck by how great a writer she is. (The Tourism Board of Friday Harbor needs to name a street or something after her, she made it sound magical!)

'Christmas Eve' is a classic, wholesome tear jerker. It takes a truly skilled writer to take the 'mom for Christmas theme' and make you emotionally invested in the characters and I think LK did that.

Holly- the orphaned niece- was written beautifully and realistically. When we are first introduced to her uncles, they are a bit dry, and she enlivens the book and the family.

This is a wonderful family book, the kind of romance that you wouldnt mind lending your mom. Which brings to me what I didn't like about this novel- it was MUCH too short/light for the price. I paid 9.99 for it on the , and I thought that was too much. I can only imagine how customers who bought it hardback felt!

I am ecstatic that there were no 'grand misunderstandings' to generate conflict, and we get the feeling that the leads were friends, however I didn't get any passion from their relationship. When you couple this with the price for the book, I felt a bit cheated.

I will definitely purchase future books in this series, I just hope they are meatier and worth the price.
Mark Nolan's free and easy bachelor existence comes to an abrupt halt when his sister dies in a car accident, leaving her daughter, Holly, for Mark to raise. Mark enlists the help of his brother Sam and the three of them settle into family life in quaint Friday Harbor, an island community just off the coast of Washington. As much as Sam and Mark adore Holly, things are a bit bumpy. Sam and Mark have no experience with kids and Holly, traumatized by her mother's death, refuses to speak.

Maggie Collins is in her late twenties and lost her husband to cancer. She came to Friday Harbor for a fresh start and owns a toy shop in town. She has a rapport with Holly and Mark finds himself turning to her more and more for help with Holly and, if he's being honest with himself, because he is attracted to her.

When the story starts out, neither Mark or Maggie is in the right place to begin a new relationship. Mark is involved with someone and Maggie doesn't feel ready to move on quite yet. They start off as friends and things progress from there, with a little nudge from Holly.

This was a pleasant little Christmas story, but as romances go I have to say it was a bit of a letdown. At around 200 pages it's quite short for a full-length novel and for a good portion of the book Mark is involved with someone other than Maggie (no, there's no cheating). When they do finally get together everything is resolved so quickly that the ending feels very abrupt and a bit unsatisfactory. There's no time to savor any of the emotions because the story just sort of stops.

Given the short format the character development was quite good, and I particularly liked the interactions between Mark and his two brothers. Mark and Sam's relationship with Holly was very sweet also. I liked the setting, though I did find something kind of odd. Whenever the author would write about a town or location it sounded like a press release from the local Chamber of Commerce! If a character steps into a town (any town) we hear about how it was founded, the political leanings, what the residents drive, what kind of restaurants there are, etc. Since this is my first book by Lisa Kleypas I don't know if that's just an author quirk or if this story just contained a whole lot of filler.

Bottom Line A cute Christmas story but light on the romance. Read it for the sweet relationship between Mark and his niece, but don't expect to be swept away by the love story.

Little (if any) strong language and mild sexual content.
This was the first book by Lisa Kleypas that I have read, but it will not be the last. With a holiday theme and a "three-brothers and a toddler" cast, I can't say that the story line bore many surprises. What I loved about the book most was the slow and delightful bloom of love in the relationship between Mark and Maggie. Timid at times but rich and full just under the surface, Maggie, a young widow of two years, finally allows herself to open up and embrace what the reader has seen since the beginning.

The other thing I loved about the book was the author's exquisite ability to turn a phrase. With a minimum of words, the author could paint a picture so clearly that the reader is drawn into the scene. Never were the word images cliched or hacked. Always rich, fresh, and enjoyable.
